CONTINUING EDUCATION:  Beyond Basics

WHAT’S NEXT?
When you have completed your
Canine Manners Program classes and with the approval of your instructor, you are eligible to enter the Continuing Education program.  There is no test at the end of the CMP, no pass or fail.  A small percentage of students may not feel they are ready to comfortably move on to a wider range of specialty classes.  If either you or your instructor feels you are not quite ready and need a bit more foundation, your options, depending on your goals are to do one or more of the following:

o   Repeat CMP               (it will be good to refresh and be the best in class)
o
Team Teaching          (3  30-minute private lessons can do wonders to improve in a particular area)
o

Brush up Courses     (short courses concentrating on Come/Heel/Attention/Stay)

HOW IT WORKS  The Continuing Education classes continue to meet once a week.  What follows is a brief listing of the current CE Beyond Basics courses.  Any course marked CE101 has built-in brush up work to help build on the reliability and fluency needed for the new exercises.   The fluency work includes heeling, come, stay and more clicker basics if necessary.  The CE 101 classes also begin to add such exercises as “Leave It” and STAYS WITH MEGA DISTRACTIONS.

HOW TO SIGN UP   If you are interested in a particular class please contact us to check for day, time and costs.  Classes are offered based on demand /enrollment.   If you don’t see a particular class listed or have an idea for a class let us know we can build any class you like.  We’d be happy to set up a special class for you and a group of friends.  Class sizes are limited so don’t delay.

Specials for CMP Graduates **   Register for any Dogwise Continuing Education class and receive a 10% discount off the price of the class.  Good classes to try are Canine Good Neighbour, Clicker Fun, or Rally Obedience.      **Discount applies to CPM students who have attended all of their Canine Manners Program classes.  This discount must be used within six months of your Canine Manners class completion.

COURSES

CANINE GOOD NEIGHBOUR  101:  Improve your pet dog manners.  CGN is usually the best fit for your first CE course after CMP.  You will work on skills listed in order to pass the Canadian Kennel Club Canine Good Neighbour Test.   Test 1: Accept a friendly stranger. Test 2: Sit politely for petting.  Test 3: Appearance and Grooming.  Test 4: Loose Leash Walking.  Test 5: Walking in a crowd.  Test 6: Sit and Down requests.  Test 7: Come When called.  Test 8: Reaction to another dog.  Test 9: Reaction to Distractions.  Test 10: Supervised separation.   When you pass your CGN Test, you receive a patch and certificate from the Canadian Kennel Club.

RALLY  101:   After you have perfected the individual components a course is set with 15 or more stations.  Dog and handler learn to walk through the course performing exercises posted at the numbered cones.  For example: a 360 Right Turn – About “U” Turn – Halt, Down, Spiral Left – HALT, Down, Walk Around Your Dog.  Rally can be done solely for fun but is also a competitive national dog sport event for purebred and mixed breed dogs.

BRUSH-UP Course:    A short course for dogs that have been out of CMP for a while.  Also good for dogs needed special attention to one or two specific exercises.  We will strengthen the skills of come, heel, attention and stay.  One hour a week for 3 consecutive weeks.  CMP is a pre-requisite.

CLICK A TRICK 101:    Improve your knowledge of science and application in training.  Practice all skills learned in a Clicker short course.  Students as a class will choose and perfect at least three tricks sure to impress your neighbours.  It is not mandatory to use a clicker.  The tricks will improve the dog’s fluency at basic behaviours learned in CMP.  Examples:  Shake Hands – Roll Over – Take A Bow – Turn on a light – and lots more options.

CE PRIVATE LESSONS:      Some students request private instruction on a particular topic.  Each request will be considered on an individual basis.  Examples: CKC obedience competition, service dog work, Rally coaching, Loose Leash Walking and Recalls.

THE K-9 NOSE Knows CLASS:    Allows dogs the natural pleasure and stimulation of using their noses to provide new and interesting things for owners to do.  Examples: Find specific hidden articles – Scent Discrimination – Scent Games – Scent Puzzles – Hide & Seek.  Pre-req:  CMP, CGN and/or Rally

OBEDIENCE TRIAL COMPETITION:   Prepares dogs and handlers for CKC obedience trials or just take it for fun.  You will learn and refine the Novice Companion Dog (CD) exercises.  You will learn trial regulations and good handling skills.  A mock trial and upon completion you have the opportunity to go on to the more advances levels (CDX, UD) of competition.  Pre-req:  CGN or RALLY

DISTANCE CONTROL:  Learn new, advanced exercises that are good for everyday life and are also a component to many competitive events.  Hand signals for sit, down and come from a distance.  Emergency downs at a distance (as well as a formal CKC drop on recall exercise.  Retrieve:  pick up of object of choice, retrieve, hold and give (using a dumbbell as in CKC competition).  Pre-req: CGN or RALLY

ANIMAL ASSISTED ACTIVITIES (AAA)  People and dogs learn skills appropriate for visiting facilities nursing homes and other human health care facilities.  Train the dog for stability with challenging environments.  Train useful visitation behaviours such as “Go say Hello”, “Head on Lap” and other patient-interactive behaviours.   Or learn to start training your dog to provide personal services for you, such as close the door, pick up an item or turn off a light and more.
